What Is a Sliding Scale Fee? Why Accessibility Matters in Therapy

Sliding Scale Fee

One of the questions we are often asked is, "What is a sliding scale fee?"

Simply put, a sliding scale fee means that the cost of therapy is adjusted according to a person's financial circumstances. Rather than charging the same fee to every client, a sliding fee scale program recognizes that people come to therapy with different financial realities.

At the Calgary Narrative Collective, however, a sliding scale is more than a pricing model.

It is part of our mission.

As a nonprofit organization, we believe that meaningful therapeutic conversations should be as accessible as possible. The ability to seek counselling should not be determined solely by a person's financial circumstances.

What Is a Sliding Scale Fee?

A sliding scale fee adjusts the cost of counselling based on factors such as income and financial circumstances. While standard counselling fees remain the same for many clients, reduced fees may be available for those experiencing financial hardship.

A sliding scale does not necessarily mean free therapy. Rather, it provides a way of making professional counselling more financially accessible while ensuring that clients continue to receive the same thoughtful, high-quality care.

How Does Our Sliding Fee Scale Program Work?

At the Calgary Narrative Collective, our sliding fee scale is designed to reduce financial barriers while remaining sustainable for both our therapists and our nonprofit mission.

Fees are discussed openly during the initial consultation and are determined by considering a person's financial circumstances. We recognize that every situation is different, and our goal is to make counselling as accessible as possible within the resources available to us.

Because our reduced-fee spaces are limited, availability may vary throughout the year.

Who May Benefit From a Sliding Scale Program?

A sliding scale program may be appropriate for:

  • students

  • individuals or families with lower incomes

  • people experiencing temporary financial hardship

  • those without extended health benefits

  • families managing significant life expenses or unexpected financial changes

Eligibility is considered individually because financial circumstances are rarely identical from one person to another.

Why We Believe Accessibility Matters

Therapy has the potential to change the course of a person's life.

Yet for many people, cost becomes the reason they never begin the conversation.

At the Calgary Narrative Collective, we believe that expanding access to counselling is not separate from our educational mission it is part of it.

Every training, workshop, and consultation we provide helps support our nonprofit efforts to make counselling available through our barrier-reduced fee program.

When therapists learn with the Calgary Narrative Collective, they are also helping someone else access therapy who might otherwise be unable to afford it.

For us, these two commitments belong together.

We are committed to advancing practice while expanding access.

What Should You Ask About a Sliding Fee Scale Program?

If you are considering counselling, it can be helpful to ask:

  • Do you currently have reduced-fee appointments available?

  • How are fees determined?

  • What fee range might be available?

  • Will my fee be reviewed over time?

  • Are online sessions included?

We encourage people to speak openly about financial concerns. These conversations are a normal part of beginning therapy, and we believe transparency helps people make informed decisions.
